Farm Facts – Hay Farming in Virginia

It’s Tuesday which is Farm Fact day.

Hay farming in Virginia is the standby for all who look to purchase and own a country property or farm in Virginia.  There is always more to it than you think. For instance, seeding a field in orchard grass or timothy is one thing takes time and commitment.  You can’t just let the ordinary fescue take over.  Alfalfa is the most popular type of horse hay and it will sell for the most money in the winter time in square bails to horse community.  It holds protein and other nutrients and horse owners are generally picky about how they feed their “babies”.

When it comes to the right equipment, “nothing runs like a Deere” and Virginia tractor is the place to go in Central Virginia or the Piedmont is Virginia Tractor vatractor.com

Speaking of Virginia Tractor a beautiful horse farm in Western Albemarle county has what I would reference as the finest fields of horse hay I’ve come across since listing White Horse farm.

Morrowdale Farm – A field of Alfalfa.

Truly, a magnificent farm in Western Albemarle with 271-acres, a 200 year old manor house, river frontage and stunning mountain views.  It’s a sign of the market that this property remains actively listed however I’ve been told for weeks that Chris Long (of Albemarle county fame and the  NFL’s St. Louis Rams) is buying the property.  The farm and estate market (real estate in general) is subject to a lot of speculation and rumor. Either way, this farm is a gem.

Morrowdale is currently listed with Jim Faulconer of McLean Faulconer. This farm is under conservation easement.
